The Democrat-dominated state of New York offers a disturbing glimpse into the future of our nation if Democrats are allowed to rule unfettered.
The left often cites the right to vote as one of the most important privileges bestowed upon Americans. However, anyone paying attention knows that Democrats care far more about winning elections than protecting the sanctity of the voting process. How else to explain their push back against requiring voter ID and other equally sensible measures to ensure the integrity of elections?
And how else to explain why the legislature in New York City recently passed a bill allowing non-citizens to vote in municipal elections? This bill will add an estimated 800,000 non-citizens to the voter roles, diluting the votes of the 5.5 million NYC American residents of voting age.
Although most agree this move violates New York State’s constitution, neither New York Senators Schumer nor Gillibrand nor any Democratic Congressperson from New York has publicly expressed disagreement with foreigners voting in New York’s elections.
Even the newly-elected Democrat Mayor, Eric Adams, who many hoped would bring sanity back to New York, has announced he supports foreign nationals voting in NYC. Adams could have used his veto power to block the bill.
Democratic lawmakers in New York favor non-citizens voting for the same reason the Biden administration has effectively erased the southern border- what is best for Americans takes a back seat to advancing the Democratic agenda and empowering the Democratic Party. And immigrants overwhelmingly support and vote for Democrats.
Shamefully, many Democrats are also intent on negating US citizenship. Last year New York allocated $2.1 billion of taxpayer funds to Covid relief for illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants were eligible to receive an astounding one-time payment of up to $15,600. Illegal immigrants in New York are also eligible to receive a driver’s license. And even when illegal immigrants commit a crime they are often not deported- NYC is a “sanctuary city” for illegals.
Drugs
Opioid deaths in NYC were at the highest level in 2020 since reporting began in 2000. Rather than combat this growing epidemic, the leadership in NYC has proposed to normalize drug use and make it easier to be a drug addict.
In November, NYC opened the nation’s first shooting galleries- centers where drug addicts can use illegal drugs in the presence of medical personnel. Other states, such as Rhode Island and California, are also considering opening similar drug centers.
City health officials in New York also plan to install ten vending machines across the city to dispense needles and Naloxone (a treatment for overdoses) to drug addicts. They claim these vending machines will help advance “racial equity and social justice”.
According to New York officials, enabling addicts to access drug paraphernalia as easily as snack food, “addresses barriers imposed by structural racism…and white privilege”. Yes- according to the left drug addiction is a product of racism.
Racism Everywhere
Shamefully, almost all of the Democratic party’s agenda hinges on convincing the American people that “white supremacy” and racism are responsible for all of society’s ills, and the only cure is government regulation/intervention and reverse racism.
In line with this distorted reasoning, New York State recently published guidelines for dispensing the limited supply of life-saving Covid treatments. Accordingly, all risk factors being equal “non-white race or Hispanic/Latino ethnicity” are to be given priority Covid treatment over whites.
Biden’s CDC and FDA have also directed healthcare providers to prioritize non-whites over whites. Never mind that no studies indicate African or Hispanic ancestry is a risk factor for severe Covid when controlling for factors such as income and education.
Theoretically, an illegal migrant from Guatemala living in the US, with the same health profile as a white American, would receive priority Covid treatment over the American. Welcome to the left’s version of America
Crime
In 2019 New York eliminated cash bail for many crimes. Released with no bail include many perpetrators of crimes such: as stalking, assault, burglary, arson, robbery, and many drug offenses. New York judges do not even have the discretion to detain a defendant they deem a danger to the public.
In the summer of 2020, the NYC council also defunded the NYPD by $1 billion. No surprise, criminals are emboldened, and violent crime is surging.
In NYC, homicides are up 40% compared to 2019, and shootings have doubled from last year. Robberies have increased 24%, felony assaults 11.2%, carjackings an astounding 55% – almost every category of crime is up double digits from recent years.
Robert Boyce, retired chief of detectives for the New York Police Department and an ABC News contributor, was asked his opinion on the rise in homicides. He replied that one statistic stands out –
“Nobody’s getting arrested anymore.”
NBC New York last December asked then-police commissioner Dermot Shea about the rise in crime in New York City. Shea lamented the no cash bail reform laws and the lack of prosecution following arrests.
“We are in a place right now which, by any definition is insanity. When you make public statements, ‘I’m not prosecuting x’, I think you’re sending a real strong message to the criminal element. Stolen cars were essentially solved in this city, but you’ve taken any penalty away for stealing a car. So it’s become a game in this city.”
New Mayor Eric Adams ran on a platform of law and order, with the promise to make NYC safe again. However, just installed Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has other plans. On January 3, Bragg distributed a memo to his staff dictating radical transformations to law enforcement policy. Never mind cracking down on crime, Bragg’s changes are a gift to criminals.
William Rolon, an ex-con accused of stealing more than $2,000 worth of cold medicine and other items while brandishing a knife, was recently told in court that he should “feel lucky” he got busted after new Manhattan DA Bragg took office.
During Rolon’s arraignment for misdemeanor petit larceny, Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Jay Weiner advised him that his crime was “a case that two weeks ago would have been charged as a robbery.”
“Based on your record, you would have faced a long period of time in jail if convicted,” Weiner said during the court proceeding. “The newly elected district attorney has new policies. You’re not charged with robbery; you’re charged with a misdemeanor here.”
Despite committing armed robbery, Rolon was only charged with a misdemeanor and released with no bail.
Under Bragg, numerous offenses, such as prostitution, trespassing, fare dodging, and resisting arrest, will no longer be prosecuted. In other words, these crimes are effectively now legal. Many other serious crimes, including armed robbery and drug dealing, will be downgraded from a felony to a misdemeanor.
Bragg’s memo also said that his office “will not seek a carceral sentence”, except for the most serious crimes such as homicide, some sex crimes, and public corruption.
It gets worse. When prosecutors do seek a prison sentence, the maximum will be 20 years outside “exceptional circumstances”. Bragg is also disallowing his office to pursue a life sentence without parole- no matter the crime. And only in “very serious cases” will his office recommend pretrial detention.
Incredibly, Bragg claims these changes “will make us safer”.
New York is not an outlier. Many other blue states have similar policies as New York. The truth is that the Democratic party of today is unrecognizable from the party it was just ten years ago. The radical left is now the mainstream of the party.
There is almost no daylight between the Bernie Sanders’ wing of the Democratic party and Biden, whom the media falsely described during the 2020 presidential campaign as a moderate Democrat.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have never been considered moderates. But in the last few years, they have both pushed an increasingly radical left agenda as demanded by their party.
The political agenda in New York is the political agenda of the Democratic party. Currently, the only impediment to the left enacting their radical policies on a national level is the 50/50 Senate, and two Democrat hold-out senators.
If Democrats increase their majorities in the House and Senate and hold onto the presidency in 2024, our country will be unrecognizable. Thankfully, early polling indicates this is highly unlikely.
